It also leads the way in stem cell research, exploring treatments and cures that will transform the future for more people. Its Patient Services team provides support, information and guidance to patients and their families at every stage of the transplant journey – from the point of diagnosis right through to long-term recovery.

Facilitating stem cell transplants

We run the Anthony Nolan stem cell register, recruiting new potential donors from as many different backgrounds as possible so that everyone who needs a stem cell transplant has the best possible chance of finding their perfect match. As of 2024, we have over 900,000 potential stem cell donors on the register, waiting in the wings in case they turn out to be someone’s match.

Funding and carrying out groundbreaking research

The Anthony Nolan Research Institute opened in 1996, and since then our scientists have made discoveries that have transformed how transplants are performed worldwide. We also run qualitative research projects to capture and understand our patients’ transplant experiences to ultimately improve their quality of life.

Supporting patients and their families clinically, practically, and emotionally

Our in-house Patient Services team provides wraparound care and support for patients and their families, offering a dedicated Telephone Emotional Support Service (TESS), financial grants, health information and guidance, and an online forum where patients and families can share their experiences in a safe, understanding environment.
