I work part-time as a Liaison and Support Officer at Cancer Card funded by Pink Ribbon Foundation. I work predominantly in the Lanarkshire area, although have joined cancer communities throughout Scotland and Northern Ireland. My role is evolving and exciting with never two days being the same. I work with NHS breast cancer specialists ensuring that Cancer Card is known as a support service to their cancer patients and their families. If those in need of non-medical support who do not have access to our 24/7 online support hub, I am only too happy to connect with them directly by phone and sign-post them to organisations who can offer help. It is vital that cancer patients and families are given as much medical information as possible and we are here to complete their knowledge base by giving non-medical data specific to their needs. Empowering people to make informed decisions at a time when they are able to means everything to Cancer Card and I am happy to play a part in helping those who need it most.
After taking early retirement I decided that I would like to do some volunteer work. Having been diagnosed with cancer twice myself, I felt that I really wanted to give something back to the cancer community but wasn’t quite sure how or where to start….enter Jen Hardy MBE! Jen and I had worked together and, although we didn’t really know each other very well, I knew that she was trying to start a cancer charity and I knew from the start that this would be a perfect way to get involved. I volunteered with Cancer Card for 6 months and am now employed as a Service Support Officer. Jen is such an inspiration to so many people she motivates me, she encourages me, she pushes me out of my comfort zone and she makes me a better person. Cancer Card is helping to improve the quality of so many people’s lives who are touched by cancer, and I am proud to be part of such a special charity.
Jen was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 breast cancer in October 2017. Jen’s cancer remains stable thanks to her ongoing treatment and care at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. Since diagnosis, Jen has been a passionate charity campaigner for Breast Cancer Now and was the face of Breast Cancer Now’s Perjeta Now! campaign, where together with the charity, Jen successfully campaigned for the drug Pertuzumab (Perjeta) to be made available on the NHS in Scotland in 2019. Before being diagnosed, Jen was a highly skilled IT professional, with significant experience in both private and public sectors, covering highly complex systems development, implementation, maintenance and support.
Karen brings a wealth of experience to the charity, specialising in marketing, strategic planning & growth. Together with her commercial acumen, professional skillset and extensive network she is committed to supporting the team and delivering the success of Cancer Card’s the legacy and vision.
